How to sell lighting, curtains and rugs online when photos fall short

Lamps, curtains and rugs are hard to judge from a product photo. Here is what shoppers need to see for each one, and how to show it without a studio.

Lighting, curtains and rugs are hard to sell online because their value only appears in a room. A lamp is about the light it gives, a curtain is about how it hangs and filters daylight, and a rug is about its size against the furniture. To sell them well, show each one in context, give the measurements that matter, and let shoppers picture it in their own space.

Why do these three categories struggle with normal product photos?

A cut-out photo works for a chair, because a chair looks like a chair anywhere. It fails for these products.

  • A pendant on a white background could be 20 cm wide or 60 cm. You cannot tell.
  • A folded curtain shows the colour and nothing else.
  • A rug photographed from above is a rectangle with a pattern. Whether it is big enough for a living room stays a mystery.

Shoppers fill those gaps with guesses, and guesses turn into abandoned baskets or returns.

What do shoppers need to see for lighting?

  • Scale. Show the lamp beside a sofa, above a table or next to a bed.
  • Switched on and off. The glow, and the shade in daylight.
  • The quality of light. Warm or cool, focused or diffused. Say it in words as well.
  • Hanging height. For pendants, show the drop and say whether the cable can be adjusted.
  • The practical facts. Bulb type, whether a bulb is included, and whether it can be dimmed.

What do shoppers need to see for curtains?

  • Hung at a window, at full length, both open and closed.
  • Light through the fabric. Sheer, lined and blackout fabrics look completely different with daylight behind them.
  • Fullness. How gathered the curtain looks at the stated width.
  • A close-up of the weave and the heading style.
  • A measuring guide linked beside the size options.

What do shoppers need to see for rugs?

  • Size against furniture. Under the front legs of a sofa, or under a dining table with the chairs pulled out.
  • Each size shown in a room, not only the largest one.
  • Pile and texture up close, ideally with light across the surface.
  • Colour in daylight. Rugs shift a great deal between studio light and a real room.
  • The pattern scale, which is hard to read from above.

What is the checklist by category?

How can you show all of this without a shoot for every item?

Hanging forty pairs of curtains in a studio is nobody’s idea of a good week. Staging is the practical answer. With Reimagine in Splatr, you start from one clear photo of the product and place it in a styled room, then download the image sized for your store, feed and ads. A pendant appears above a dining table, a rug sits under a sofa, and the scale is finally visible.

Keep the product honest. Compare the colour and pattern of each staged image with the real item before publishing, and keep one true photograph in every gallery.

How do you help shoppers picture it at home?

Your styled room shows what the product can look like. The shopper still wonders about their own living room, with their own wall colour and window. Products listed on the Splatr marketplace can be placed into a photo the shopper uploads, at realistic scale and in the room’s own light. For curtains and rugs especially, seeing them at their own window or on their own floor settles the question.

What should the product page say?

Put the numbers where the images raise the question. Next to a rug in a room, state the size shown. Next to a pendant, give the diameter and drop. Offer swatches for curtains and rugs if you can, and make the returns terms easy to find.

For the full page structure, see the furniture product page checklist, and for returns, how to reduce furniture returns.
