How square footage is worked out.
For a rectangle, multiply length by width. An L-shaped room is split into two rectangles, each worked out and added together. A triangle is base × height ÷ 2, and a round bay uses π × (diameter ÷ 2)². Enter feet and inches as 12' 6", 12ft 6in or 12 6. One square metre is 10.764 square feet.
The total is only as good as the measurements. Measure wall to wall at floor level and leave out anything you would not count, such as garages or areas with low ceilings, according to the standard you follow: ANSI Z765 in the US, the RICS International Property Measurement Standards in the UK. This is an estimate, not a certified measurement.

How do you calculate square footage of a room?
Multiply the length by the width in feet. A room 12 ft by 15 ft is 180 sq ft. For an L-shaped room, split it into two rectangles, work out each one and add them together.
How do I enter feet and inches?
Type 12' 6", 12ft 6in or just 12 6. The calculator converts inches to fractions of a foot, so 12 ft 6 in becomes 12.5 ft.
How do I convert square feet to square metres?
Divide square feet by 10.764. The calculator shows both units, so you can copy whichever your listing or portal uses.
Should I include hallways and bathrooms?
For a total internal floor area, yes: include every room and circulation space you measured. Measurement standards differ, such as ANSI Z765 in the US and RICS IPMS in the UK, so follow the one that applies to your listing.
What is price per square foot?
The asking or sale price divided by the floor area. It helps compare homes of different sizes. Enter a price and the calculator works it out.
