You can see furniture in your own room before buying in two ways: an augmented reality app that drops a 3D model into your live camera view, or a photo-based tool that places the product into a picture of your room. AR is good for checking size on the spot. A photo is better for judging how the whole room will look, and for comparing products from more than one shop.
Why is it so hard to picture furniture at home?
A product photo answers one question: what does this sofa look like in a studio? It says nothing about your floor, your wall colour or the light from your window. Most of us are not good at imagining that gap, which is why so many pieces look bigger, darker or simply different once they arrive.
Seeing the item where it will actually live removes most of the guessing. It will not replace a tape measure, but it tells you quickly whether something belongs in the room.
What are the main ways to do it?
| Option | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| IKEA Kreativ | Scan your room in the IKEA app, erase existing furniture and add IKEA products | Planning a room around IKEA’s range |
| Amazon View in Your Room | Place eligible Amazon products in your room in the app or on desktop | Checking items you already plan to buy on Amazon |
| Wayfair Muse | Browse AI-generated rooms, then apply a style to a photo of your space | Finding a look and shopping Wayfair’s catalogue |
| Houzz View in My Room 3D | Place true-to-scale 3D products through your phone camera | Checking fit for Houzz products |
| Splatr marketplace | Upload one photo of your room and place products from different interior brands | Comparing stores in one room, with no app to install |
IKEA describes Kreativ as a way to build a lifelike copy of your space and clear out what is already there. Amazon’s Room Decorator lets you add several products to the same room. Wayfair’s Muse starts from inspiration images and links them to products it sells. Features and availability change by country and device, so check each app before you rely on it.
What is the catch with retailer apps?
Each one shows you that retailer’s products only. That is fine if you have already chosen where to shop. It is less helpful when the sofa you like is from one brand, the lamp from another and the rug from a third, which is how most rooms actually come together.
Some AR tools also need a recent phone, good light and a clear floor. If your room is full of the furniture you are trying to replace, placing a 3D model on top of it can be awkward.
How does the photo-based approach work?
You take one normal photo of your room and upload it. Then you pick a product and it is placed into the photo at realistic scale, with lighting and perspective matched to the picture. On the Splatr marketplace, the products come from different interior brands, covering furniture, lighting, curtains and decor, so you can try a combination from several stores in the same room.
When you find something you want, the listing takes you to that brand’s own product page to buy. Splatr does not sit between you and the shop.
How accurate is a room preview?
Treat any preview, AR or photo, as a realistic visualisation and not a guarantee. It is very good at answering “does this suit my room?” and “is this roughly the right size?”. It cannot confirm that a sofa will fit through your front door.
Before you order:
- Measure the space, and the route into it, including doors and stairs.
- Check the dimensions on the product page against your measurements.
- Look at the fabric or finish description, and order a swatch for large purchases.
- Read the returns policy for bulky items.
Which option should you use?
If you are loyal to one retailer, use its app. If you are mixing brands or want to decide from a photo you already have, a photo-based tool is quicker. Many people do both: a photo to choose the look, then a tape measure and the product page to confirm the fit.
