Hotel photography tips: room shots that get booked

Practical hotel photography tips for rooms, bathrooms, restaurants and pools, a shot list, and how to edit and reuse the photos for video and social.

Good hotel photography comes down to five things: shoot rooms from the corner at chest height, mix daylight with every lamp switched on, keep vertical lines straight, style each room with a few details, and take one hero shot per room that shows its best feature. Then edit for light and colour, and reuse the same photos for booking sites, your website, video and social media.

What shots does every hotel need?

AreaMust-have shots
ArrivalExterior by day and at dusk, entrance, lobby
Each room typeWide room shot, bed detail, view from the window, bathroom
Food and drinkRestaurant wide, a set table, signature dish, bar
FacilitiesPool, spa, gym, meeting room, terrace
DetailsToiletries, coffee station, artwork, textures
AreaView from the hotel, nearby landmark or beach

Booking sites group photos by room type, so shoot every type you sell, not only the suite.

How should you light hotel rooms?

  • Shoot mid-morning or early afternoon with curtains open.
  • Turn on every lamp, bedside light and ceiling light.
  • Avoid flash. It flattens the room and creates hard shadows.
  • Use a tripod and HDR so windows and dark corners both look right.
  • Take the exterior and terrace again at blue hour, 20 to 30 minutes after sunset.

If you miss blue hour, you can turn a daytime shot into dusk with AI.

Which angles work best?

  • Corner, chest height: shows two walls and the depth of the room.
  • Door view: what the guest sees on arrival.
  • Bed level detail: pillows, throw, bedside lamp.
  • Window view: from inside, so the view is framed by the room.
  • Bathroom straight on: for symmetry, especially with double basins.

Keep the camera level so walls stay straight. Leaning walls make a luxury room look cheap.

How do you style a hotel room for photos?

  • Make beds perfectly, with no creases
  • Hide remotes, cables, bins and room-service menus
  • Fold towels the same way in every shot
  • Add one living detail: a tray with two cups, a book, a robe on the bed
  • Open curtains evenly

How should you edit hotel photos?

Brighten shadows, keep whites neutral, straighten verticals and replace grey skies on exteriors. Keep it believable: guests notice when the room is darker or smaller than the photos.

How do you get more out of one shoot?

A shoot is expensive, so make it last all year:

  1. Edit every photo for light, colour and sky.
  2. Make seasonal versions: dusk for winter, bright sky for summer.
  3. Turn the best photos into reels with camera moves and music.
  4. Use hotel social media ideas to plan a month of posts.
  5. Restyle rooms virtually to test a refurb before you spend on it.
